      <image:title>Home - Teaching Philosophy</image:title>
<image:caption>Sharing my passion for classical languages, history, and culture with adolescents while helping them grow into responsible, engaged, and empowered young adults has been the most rewarding work I have ever done. Believing that students must feel confident and supported in order for any learning to occur, my primary objective in every class I teach is to establish a trusting and positive environment in which students of all backgrounds and abilities can feel at ease. While maintaining high standards of accountability among my students in terms of preparedness and effort, I also make sure that students in my classroom can feel comfortable making mistakes, asking questions, or proposing new ideas and interpretations. In this way, the classroom becomes cooperative and student-led, rather than teacher-focused, empowering students to take responsibility for their own educational experience.</image:caption>

      <image:title>About</image:title>
<image:caption>A native of Detroit, I earned my Bachelor’s degree in Classics with special honors from the University of Texas at Austin. I did my graduate work in Classics and Ancient History at the University of Toronto, where my research focused on Greek historiography, ancient numismatics, and epic poetry. I also spent a year studying Greek archaeology as the Thomas Day Seymour fellow at the American School of Classical Studies in Athens. I taught Ancient Greek, Latin, Classical Civilization, and Greek history at the University of Toronto before moving in 2013 to Exeter, New Hampshire, to teach Latin and Ancient Greek at Phillips Exeter Academy. In 2021 I moved to Edinburgh, where I currently am Head of Classics at Scotland’s only independent prep school. When I’m not in the classroom, I love to go on adventures to places near and far. Recent travels have found me exploring the rock-cut tombs of Petra in Jordan, or seeking out Iron Age fortresses in the Scottish Highlands. An avid photographer, I love seeking out places both ancient and modern as my subjects, whether driving through the French countryside looking for ancient Roman bridges or wandering the streets of cities capturing images of graffiti and street art. Music has always been a passion of mine as well and, in addition to working in record stores as a teenager and young adult, I also DJ on community radio and never tire of searching for vinyl to add to my collection.</image:caption>
